Caleb Stayton Named First Team Academic All-American Again

MUNCIE, Ind. – Former Ball State baseball player Caleb Stayton was recognized on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday afternoon.
Stayton was one of two baseball players to earn first team honors for the second year in a row and the only player from the Mid-American Conference to make the complete list of 33 players.
On the baseball diamond, Stayton was an All-MAC second team honoree at first base this year after leading the Cardinals in batting average (.331) and on-base percentage (.455). The native of Goshen, Indiana, posted the league's best numbers in on-base percentage and sacrifice fly balls (6) as well. He had the game-winning hit at Central Michigan on May 18, a two-run single in the seventh inning.
In the classroom, Stayton was one of five Ball State baseball players to earn his collegiate diploma in May. He graduated with a 3.927 GPA while majoring in telecommunications.
Among the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball team, there are 19 who carry at least a 3.90 GPA, with nine student-athletes sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 11 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball first team have an average GPA of 3.91.
Stayton is the second Ball State student-athlete to earn Academic All-America® honors this year. Soccer goalie Alyssa Heintschel was a third team selection in the fall.
