May 18, 2017 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Ball State softball senior center fielder Rachel Houck was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region Second Team as announced Thursday (May 18) by the NFCA.
A starter in all 58 games for the Cardinals this season, Houck led the Ball State offense with a .319 batting average. She finished first in the MAC and 20th nationally with 17 doubles, while ranking third in the league and 48th nationally with 13 home runs.
Houck's 51 runs scored paced all MAC players, while her 35 RBI were a team high and ranked ninth in the league. She produced 17 multiple hit games over the course of the season, including a four-hit effort versus Holy Cross (March 8). She provided the game-winning RBI in three contests, while scoring the game-winning run four times.
One of her best performances of the year came in Ball State's 17-2 (5) win over Drake (Feb. 17), when she recorded career-highs of six RBI and five runs scored in what was also her first career two home run game.
Houck was also a dominant force on the base paths, going a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts, becoming just the third player in program history to finish a season with a perfect stolen base percentage with at least 10 attempts. The effort helped Houck finish her career as Ball State's all-time leader in stolen base percentage at .958 (23-for-24).
Houck also finished her three-year playing career at Ball State ranked sixth in program history with a .562 career slugging percentage, ninth in home runs (20), 15th in runs scored (85), 17th in batting average (.320), 18th in on base percentage (.384), 19th in RBI (67) and 20th in doubles (28).
Overall, the Ball State softball program has had at least one player named to a NFCA All-Region Team in each of the last six seasons, with at least two honorees in four of the six years.
