Softball’s Wilmes Named MAC West Pitcher of the Week
April 18, 2017 | Softball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After turning in a 0.93 ERA and holding opposing batters to a .185 average in three appearances last week, Ball State softball junior pitcher Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Matre Dei) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week.
Wilmes, who earns the honor for the first time in her career, struck out 26 batters over 15.0 innings of work, including a career-high 10 strikeouts in last Saturday's series finale versus Eastern Michigan. In addition, Wilmes did not surrender a run over her final 14 innings of work, while only issuing two walks on the week.
Wilmes opened the week last Wednesday by throwing three innings of relief at Northern Illinois. After striking out the first batter she faced, Wilmes gave up a single and home run. She recovered quickly, however, striking out the final two batters of the inning. Wilmes added two more strikeouts to open the fourth and two more in the fifth, while retiring the side in order in both frames. She finished the contest with seven strikeouts over 3.0 innings of work.
In last Friday's series opener versus Eastern Michigan, Wilmes improved to 12-9 on the year by limiting the Eagles to five hits and no runs over 6.0 innings of work. In earning her fourth complete game shutout victory of the year, Wilmes set the tone early by striking out a pair of batters in each of the first three innings on her way to finishing the day with nine Ks.
Wilmes closed the week with an even more dominating performance in Saturday's second game versus EMU, striking out a career-high 10 batters and limiting the Eagles to just three hits over 6.0 innings. She retired Eastern Michigan in order three times in the game and finished the appearance with back-to-back strikeouts in the top of the sixth.
Over the last month, Wilmes has been one of the most dominating pitchers in the MAC by compiling a 10-1 record and 1.93 ERA over 65.1 innings of work. She has held opponents to a .191 average during the run, while striking out 70 batters. Of her 10 wins, four have been complete game shutouts, the first four of her career.
The Ball State softball team closes the home portion of its 2017 schedule this weekend, starting Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch versus Toledo. The Cardinals and Rockets will also play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
