Sean Kennedy Named MAC West Player of the Week
April 17, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Thanks to his record-setting performance in Saturday's win over Bowling Green, Ball State baseball infielder Sean Kennedy was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week Monday afternoon. He is the second Ball State player to earn the weekly award this spring.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Kennedy went 5-for-5 at the plate with three home runs, a triple, double and nine RBIs in the 23-5 win. The native of Dayton, Ohio, set a program single-game record with 17 total bases. His three home runs and nine RBIs were both one shy of the Ball State single-game record. The senior's five hits were a personal high and also equaled a team season high.
Kennedy hit .714 (10-of-14) in the three-game sweep over Bowling Green with six of his 10 hits going for extra bases. For the season, he leads the team in batting average (.343), home runs (7), RBIs (31) and slugging percentage (.571).
Ohio infielder Rudy Rott (East Player), Miami pitcher Shane Smith (East Pitcher) and Eastern Michigan pitcher Sam Delaplane (West Pitcher) were the other award winners this week.
Ball State (18-18, 6-6 MAC) has won seven straight games to reach the .500 plateau once again. The Cardinals are batting .403 and have scored 100 runs the last seven games. Next up is a road trip to Big Ten foe Purdue tomorrow, April 18. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
