March 05, 2017 | Gymnastics
MUNCIE, Ind.-- The Ball State gymnastics team broke the school record on floor scoring a 49.500 on Senior Day, Sunday, Mar. 5 at Worthen Arena. Although the team suffered a 195.200-194.750 loss to Western Michigan, many Ball State gymnasts earned career highs and etched their names in the record book.Â
"We had some good things and some disappointing things happen tonight," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Breaking the school record on floor after having an unsatisfying performance on beam is really exciting and great to know that when faced with adversity this team can dig down deep and come out and earn big scores for solid routines."Â
The team scored a 48.825Â on vault, 48.600Â on bars, 47.825Â on beam, and a 49.500Â to finish and break a record on floor.
Bri Slonim and Jordyn Penny stood second and third on vault scoring 9.825 and 9.800 respectively. Â
On bars Madison Howell and Jordyn Penny tied for second place with scores of 9.875. For Howell this marks a career high performance.
Jackie Duffy and Bri Slonim earned personal best scores on beam. Duffy landed in second place on beam with a score of 9.850. Slonim followed in third with a score of 9.825.
The Cardinals concluded the meet on floor where Sydney Finke, Kayla Beckler and Kaitlyn Menzione entered the Ball State record book with scores of 9.925. All three athletes tied for first place. Sarah Ebeyer placed fourth with a score of 9.875 matching her career high. Shelby Arms matched her career high with a score of 9.850 and Clare Collins earned a new personal best score of 9.850 respectively.Â
In the all-around competition of today's meet, Kaitlyn Menzione took third place with a 38.125.
"I'm excited to face Western Michigan again in a couple of days in their home gym," Saleem stated. "There were a lot of bittersweet things that happened tonight and I think the team is ready to redeem themselves whenever we face Western and UICÂ on Tuesday.Â
The Cardinals travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. in hopes of earning a win against Western Michigan and University of Illinois-Chicago Tuesday, Mar. 7 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
