Men's Tennis Picks Up Two Wins In Doubleheader

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team picked up two wins Saturday in its home doubleheader at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals started the afternoon off with a 6-1 victory over Wright State then earned a 7-0 sweep over Taylor University in their second match.

At 1 p.m., the Cardinals took the doubles point fairly easy over the Raiders, only giving up two games total. On court three, Marko Guzina alongside teammate Matt Helm swept Jason Holloway and Estrada Sanchez 6-0. Lucas Andersen and doubles partner Tom Carney then took down Alvarez de la Villa and Jacob Perkins by a score of 6-2 at the No. 2 position.

Up 1-0 heading into singles play, the Cardinals took five of the six matches from Wright State. Four of the victories were straight set decisions. Marko Guzina earned a three set thriller on court three over Jonas Brezing, 4-6, 7-6, 12-10.

That evening, Ball State returned to action against Taylor University. Again, the Cardinals secured the doubles point with wins on all three courts. The doubles tandems of Andrew Stutz and Patrick Downs along with Nemanja Guzina and Jan Jirus all earned victories by a score of 8-1 at their respective positions. Lucas Andersen and brother Conner also took their opponent down on the top court, 8-4.

In singles action, Ball State took all six matches all in straight sets over Taylor. Marko Guzina, Nemanja Guzina, Conner Andersen and Matt Helm each earned sets by a score of 6-0.

The Ball State men's tennis team continues spring play when it plays at Lipscomb Friday beginning at 10 a.m. and then on the road at Belmont on Saturday. Both matches will be played in Nashville, Tenn. After that, the Cardinals begin Mid-American Conference action at Western Michigan on March 24.
