March 20, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Thanks to his outstanding performance in the 10-2 win over Dayton on Sunday, Ball State baseball pitcher John Baker was tabbed the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon. He is the third Ball State pitcher to earn the weekly award in five weeks.
Baker carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in Sunday's win at Dayton. The righty from Hartland, Michigan, gave up a one-out single in the eighth, but quickly responded with an inning-ending double play ball. Baker struck out a season-high eight batters in the win. In five collegiate appearances, Baker is 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA. He has only allowed one earned run thus far in 2017.
Junior Colin Brockhouse (Feb. 20) and sophomore Evan Marquardt (Feb. 27) have also earned the award this spring. Ball State's pitching staff leads the league and ranks 15th nationally in team ERA (2.76).
Ohio outfielder Spencer Ibarra (East Player), Miami pitcher Shane Smith (East Pitcher) and Toledo outfielder AJ Montoya (West Player) were the other award winners this week.
Ball State (11-9) returns to action on Wednesday, March 22 with a home game against Big Ten foe Purdue. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
