Cardinals scored early but saw Rockets come back to advance
KENT, Ohio -- Toledo came from one goal down at halftime to defeat the Ball State soccer team in overtime Friday in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
Allison Abbe scored for the Cardinals in just the ninth minute, but Toledo equalized early in the second half and then scored the game-winner with only three minutes left in the second overtime.
An accomplished season came to an end for Ball State (11-7-3). The Cardinals won the MAC West Division championship for the third year in a row and reached double-figure victories for the fifth consecutive year.
Ball State struck early with Abbe's rebound of a Paula Guerrero free kick and maintained a 1-0 lead headed to the break at Kent State's Dix Stadium.
That lead stood until the 56th minute when some solid passing from Toledo led to a strike from Alena Sidwell to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams generated some chances during the remainder of regulation, but neither was able to find a second goal. It was that way for most of the overtime periods, too.
But in the 107th minute, Toledo drew a foul 25 yards out and lined up for a free kick. Ball State keeper Alyssa Heintschel lept to get a hand on the initial shot, but Toledo's Regan Price was there to knock in the rebound for the golden goal.
Heintschel made five saves in the game. She and her 2017 senior classmates -- Abbe, Shannon Greeley, Aly Kohanowski, Sam Mattlin, Tristin Stuteville and Lucy Walton – helped BSU accumulate 50 wins over the past four years, tying last year's group of seniors for the most by a single class in program history.
Toledo advanced to the tournament's championship game and will play Sunday against the winner of Friday's second semifinal between Kent State and Bowling Green.
