Volleyball Blasts Past Toledo in Four-Set Thriller
November 02, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - With the match tied at one set apiece, the Ball State women's volleyball team battled through some late adversity to take the third set and ultimately score a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 31-29, 25-21) victory over Toledo Thursday night in Mid-American Conference play at Worthen Arena.
Â
In a frame already in overtime, the Cardinals (16-10; 8-5 MAC) thought the won the set at 27-25 on a Rockets (11-14; 6-7 MAC) attack error. However, the point was overturned by replay and Toledo went on to have a pair of set points, at 27-26 and 28-27.
Â
Ball State would survive both, however, and eventually win the set at 31-29 on a kill from sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ill./Illiana Christian) and a Rockets attack error.
Â
"The thing I was most proud of after the challenge was that we maintained our composure," head coach Kelli Miller said. "I thought that was a good experience for us. We were able to stay composed and kept competing as if the score were 0-0. We didn't let that one play dictate the outcome of the match. Instead we battled harder, which allowed us to come back, win the set and ultimately the match."
Â
The Cardinals carried over the momentum in the fourth set, pulling ahead 14-9 before going on to win 25-21 on a service ace from sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf).
Â
After being limited to a season-low .074 (38-28-135) attack percentage in the first meeting this season, a three-set loss at Savage Arena (Sept. 28), the Cardinals hit .203 (63-25-187) in Thursday's win with four different players blasting double digit kills to snap a three-match losing streak to the Rockets.
Â
Junior outside Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) led the quartet of players in double figures with a match-high 15 kills. However, it was her dig on the final point of the third set that kept the play alive and led to Toledo's attack error to end the frame. Dunn finished the match with five digs and three block assists.
Â
Next for the Ball State offense was junior right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) who recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs. She also served up three aces, including back-to-back aces to help the Cardinals start to pull away in the final frame.
Â
Also scoring double digit kills for Ball State in the win were the middle tandem of VanBeek and junior Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison). VanBeek finished the match with 12 kills, a team-high .333 (12-4-24) attack percentage and a match-high five total blocks (one solo and four assists). Holland added 11 kills and three total blocks (one solo and two assists).
Â
Defensively, it was sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yortown, Ind./Yorktown) who led the Ball State backcourt with a match-high 26 digs. With her fourth dig of the night, Avila became the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs. She is also the third-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs doing so in just 57 career matches.
Â
Seaman also nearly reached a milestone in Thursday's win, handing out 51 assists to bring her career total to 1,998. With two more assists, she will become just the 11th player in program history to reach the 2,000 assists plateau. She also led the Cardinals with a career-high tying four aces, scored three kills, logged eight digs and was credited with a pair of block assists.
Â
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors was senior outside Jessica Lindsey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) who finished her final regular season match at Worthen Arena with nine kills and a career-high seven digs.
Â
"Jess is continuing to get more and more comfortable on the left side," Miller said. "I think every match she gets out there, she is going to gain confidence and make bigger and bigger impacts. Tonight, she built upon a strong senior weekend and continued to shine."
Overall, the Cardinals defense limited Toledo to a .139 (49-25-173) attack percentage for the match, with Saige Thomas leading the way with 15 kills. Maurissa Leonard led the Rockets defense with 25 digs.
Â
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday, when it travels to Akron for a 5 p.m. first serve at Rhodes Arena.
