Three Volleyball Players Earn All-MAC Honors
November 15, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Ball State women's volleyball junior outside/right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team, while a pair of Cardinals earned recognition on the All-MAC Honorable Mention Team as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches and announced by the MAC office Wednesday (Nov. 15).
The Cardinals' two honorable mention selections were junior outside Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf).
With the three All-MAC honorees, Ball State continues to rank second in MAC history with 95 total All-MAC selections and 46 total First Team All-MAC honorees.
Goodsel, who earns First Team All-MAC honors for the second consecutive season, ranks second on the team in MAC-only matches with both a 2.97 kills-per-set average and a 3.10 digs-per-set average. She registered double digit kills in 11 league matches, including tying her career high with 21 versus Northern Illinois (Oct. 7).
Goodsel also collected double digit digs in 11 league matches, including a career high 28 digs versus Miami (Oct. 21). She finished league play with nine kill/dig double-doubles. A .185 (187-72-620) attacker in conference action, Goodsel also served up 15 aces and was credited with 24 blocks in MAC play.
"Brooklyn has a ton of responsibility on our team and has worked hard to develop her all-around skill set," head coach Kelli Miller said. "Her serve receive passing, offense and defense has allowed our team to have a ton of versatility within our line up, and I am confident to play her in any position. She is a mentally tough player that isn't afraid to be challenged. I'm very excited to see her continue to grow throughout the rest the season and her career."
Dunn earns All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after leading the Ball State offense and ranking ninth in conference play with a 3.21 kills-per-set average. She blasted double digit kills in 12 league matches, including leading the team in kills in each of the last five matches. In all, she led the Cardinals in kills in seven of the team's 16 conference matches.
A .204 (199-84-564) attacker in MAC play, Dunn also collected 54 digs in conference play, including a career-high nine digs in wins at Kent State (Oct. 13) and versus Eastern Michigan (Oct. 28). Dunn also made her presence felt at the net, averaging 0.58 blocks per set in league play, including eight solo blocks and 28 block assists.
"Ellie has taken her game to the next level this year," Miller said. "Her intensity and competitiveness has continued to grow with each match. She has worked really hard on developing all her shots and that has allowed her to have a lot more success when attacking. She not only hits the ball with a ton of pace, but she can also mix in a variety of off-speed shots, which really makes defending her difficult. She also adds another weapon to our defense with her blocking presence. She definitely deserves this honor."
Seaman earns All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after leading all league setters with an 11.35 assist-per-set average in conference play. She also ranked second in league-only matches with a 0.46 aces-per-set average, while helping guide the Ball State offense to the league's third-best attack percentage at .200.
Seaman dished out at least 30 assists in all 14 league matches she played, including 50-or-more on five occasions. She also logged double digit digs in five MAC matches for five assist/dig double-doubles. Overall, she averaged 2.19 digs per set in MAC play, while also collecting 0.70 kills and 0.37 blocks per set.
"Amber has done a great job of leading our team and offense so far this season," Miller said. "She has worked hard to develop setter-hitter connections with all of our attackers which has allowed our team to run a balanced offense. She has continued to mature and develop as a leader, and she's someone her teammates can count on to compete for every point. Two other weapons that Amber has are her serve and defensive presence. Those skills can oftentimes go unnoticed in a setter, but they play a huge role in our team's success."
The Ball State women's volleyball team opens 2017 MAC Tournament play Friday at 7 p.m. as the third seed and will battle either sixth-seeded Western Michigan or seventh-seeded Central Michigan. The Broncos and Chippewas square off in first round action Thursday at 7 p.m.
