
Track & Field Heads to Lexington for Kentucky Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's indoor track & field team returns to action Friday, when it opens the two day Kentucky Invitational by competing in the hammer throw (4 p.m.) and the distance medley relay (7 p.m.).

Action at Kentucky's Nutter Field House picks up again at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with the women's high jump. The Cardinals are scheduled to compete in nine events on the second day of competition.

In all, 22 teams will be in Lexington for the meet, including the host Wildcats who are ranked eighth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason computer rankings.

Ball State will be competing in the Kentucky Invitational for the second consecutive season after turning in five career best performances and four top 20 finishes at the meet a year ago.

The Cardinals enter the meet with a pair of the nation's top student-athletes as sophomore Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) and freshman Jasmine Harris (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) continue to rank in the top 35 nationally. Lewis leads the Mid-American Conference and ranks 13th nationally in the high jump after clearing 1.75m at the Mastodon Opener (Dec. 3). Harris ranks first in the league and 35th nationally in the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.61 also set in Fort Wayne.

Including the two MAC leaders, Ball State's student-athletes appear in the top 10 of their respective events on the MAC performance list a total of 14 times.

Sophomores Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) Â and Jazmin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill) are next on the MAC performance list, ranking third in the 60m dash (7.64) and third in the 60m hurdles (8.71), respectively.

So far this season, the Cardinals have picked up eight individual event victories with two each from Lewis (high jump), Smith (60m hurdles) and Stewart (60m dash). Freshman Amber Jones (Matteson, Ill./Rich South) won the 300m dash at the Mastodon Opener, while Adrienne Mayfield (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) took top billing in the weight throw last weekend at Western Michigan.
