Volleyball Opens MAC Play with Thrilling 3-2 Win Over CMU
September 23, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Led by a career-high 20 kills from reigning Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), the Ball State women's volleyball team opened league play with a thrilling 3-2 (28-26, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 15-11) victory over Central Michigan Friday night at Worthen Arena.
"It's going to be a battle every time we step on the court in MAC play," first-year head coach Kelli Miller said. "I am glad we got the first win under our belt to give our younger players some confidence. At the same time, this showed everyone on our team how hard we are going to have to work the rest of the year. CMU put up a tremendous fight and made a lot of good runs in sets three and four. Tomorrow night, we have to come out and eliminate the runs of points we gave up tonight."
The Cardinals (5-10 / 1-0 MAC) opened the night strong, winning the opening two sets only to see the Chippewas (6-7 / 0-1 MAC) rally back to claim the next two and force a deciding fifth frame.
In the back-and-forth final set, it was the strong serving of sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) which made the difference. With Ball State leading 12-11, Schreiner went behind the line and kept the CMU passers off-balance to help force three errors ending the match.
Freshman setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) set up the match-ending service run with her career-high seventh kill, while Goodsel and redshirt sophomore middle hitter Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton) combined for a block on the next play. Schreiner's strong serving then helped force a setting error and an attack error to give Ball State its first league win of the season.
Schreiner finished the night with a match-best three aces, including two in a fourth-set run which turned a 16-13 Ball State deficit into a 17-16 advantage. She added one more ace early in the final set before serving out the match.
In addition to her career-high 20 kills, Goodsel added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. She also scored four block assists and hit .241 (20-7-54) from the right side.
Seaman earned her eighth double-double of the year, adding 12 digs and career-high tying 57 assists to go along with her seven kills. Seaman set the Ball State offense to a .225 (68-28-178) rate of success, while hitting .462 (7-1-13) herself.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and sophomore outside hitter Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) also collected double-digit kills in the match, finishing with 16 and 12, respectively.
In the backcourt, Ball State freshman libero and reigning MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led all players with 22 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Hannah Smith (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) added 15 to give the Cardinals four players with double-figure digs on the night. Smith also ended the opening set with an ace.
Devoe led the Ball State defense at the net with five total blocks, including combining with Dunn to end the second set with a block.
The Ball State women's volleyball team continues MAC play Saturday, when it hosts Eastern Michigan in another 7 p.m. first serve on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App. The Cardinals are looking to snap a three-match losing streak to the Eagles.
