Volleyball Earns Pair of Friday Wins in Active Ankle Challenge
September 17, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Big plays on both offense and defense were the theme of the day for the Ball State women's volleyball team which ran its winning streak to four matches with victories over UNCG (3-2; 25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11) and Valparaiso (3-1; 25-23, 25-9, 21-25, 25-17) Friday at Worthen Arena on the opening day of the Active Ankle Challenge.
The biggest test of the weekend still lies ahead, however, as the Cardinals (4-9) host 19th-ranked Ohio State in a 6 p.m. first serve Saturday to close play in the two-day tournament. The match will be for the tournament championship as the Buckeyes (9-2) also scored wins over the Crusaders (6-7) and Spartans (4-7) on the day.
"Tonight was huge for us," Ball State first-year head coach Kelli Miller said about the win over Valparaiso. "I have been saying from the beginning, our goal is to make sure we are staying the course and it's going to be a process. You can tell our maturity has increased even from just a week ago. We stayed on course and we didn't get overly rattled. That is a huge confidence boost for us, knowing we are capable of playing well and capable of coming back from some big deficits."
The maturity Miller talked about was on full display in the nightcap, as the Cardinals trailed 20-15 early in the opening set versus the Crusaders. The home team was not rattled, however, as it rallied back to win the set 25-23. After a dominating performance in the second set, the Cardinals rebounded from a third-set loss to end the match in four and pick up its first win over an in-state opponent this season.
"We knew Valpo wasn't going to go down easy," Miller added. "They are a tough team and come to battle night in and night out. Our message after the third set was to stay the course, and that's just what we did."
Redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) provided a huge offensive punch for the Cardinals, leading all players with 20 kills in the nightcap. It was the third time this season the Canfield, Ohio, native has smashed at least 20 kills in the match. Entering the week, she was the only player in the Mid-American Conference with multiple 20-kill matches.
Sophomore outside hitter Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) also turned in a strong performance versus the Crusaders, blasting 16 kills. Combined the duo scored 36 of the Cardinals' 58 kills and led the offense to a .250 (58-21-148) attack percentage for the night, the team's second-best mark of the season.
Freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) continued her strong play on defense, leading all players with 32 digs. The effort was just shy of her career-high mark set last weekend versus Appalachian State (Sept. 10). She also managed her seventh perfect passing match of the season, going 22-for-22 on the night.
Freshman defensive specialist Hannah Smith (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) and sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) also collected double-digit digs in the win, with 13 and 11, respectively.
Sophomore middle hitter Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) paced the Cardinals at the net with five total blocks (two solo and three assists), while freshman middle hitter Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) was second on the squad with four (one solo and three assists).
Earlier in the day, the Cardinals turned in another strong all-around performance to secure a 3-2 victory over UNCG in the tournament opener.
Mangapora was Ball State's top attacker in the match with 19 kills, while Goodsel was not far behind with 17. Goodsel also collected 14 digs for her second double-double of the season and the fifth of her career.
Rounding our Ball State's top attackers versus the Spartans were Holland with 10 markers and redshirt sophomore Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton) with a career-high eight kills. Devoe also led Ball State at the net with four total blocks (two solo and two assists), while Holland added three (one solo and two assists).
The backcourt was once again controlled by the local duo of Avila and Smith, who earned 20 and 13 digs, respectively.
