
Bryzek Paces Cross Country at Indiana Intercollegiates

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Junior Jessica Bryzek (Brownsburg, Ind./Indiana Academy) finished just off her career-best pace, leading the Ball State cross country team to the finish line at Friday's weather-delayed Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Indiana at the IU Cross Country Course.

Bryzek crossed the 5K finish line in 19:31.51 to place 23rd overall and 21st among scored NCAA Division I runners in the Women's Championship Race. The effort was just off her career-best 5K time of 19:30.60 set her freshman season at the Notre Dame Invitational (Oct. 3, 2014).

Overall, the Cardinals placed fifth among the six NCAA Division I programs in the Women's Championship Race, with its next four runners all being new to the program.

Freshman Emily Tromp (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) finished just behind Bryzek, placing 25th among scored runners in 19:37.43. Rounding out Ball State's scored runners were redshirt freshman Stephanie McElhaney (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) in 28th (19:39.74), freshman Lauren Whitehouse (Mahomet, Ill/Mahomet-Seymour) in 32nd (19:54.83) and freshman Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) in 34th (20:02.46) in her first collegiate race.

The Cardinals also had six runners entered in the Women's Open Race earlier in the day, with junior Kitty Taylor (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) leading the pack in 12th at 20:12.98.

The Ball State cross country team returns to action Friday (Sept. 23), when it hosts IUPUI in the Ball State Cardinal Duals at the Muncie Elks Country Club. The women's 5K race is slated to start at 3 p.m.
