#CardinalCamp16 Update: Gearing Up For First Scrimmage
August 12, 2016 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team spent the majority of the second hour of Friday's practice working on team drills or 7-on-7 situations in anticipation of tomorrow's scrimmage session. Below are some news and notes from day nine of football camp:
QUARTERBACKS LOOK SHARP IN 7-ON-7: The top two quarterbacks – sophomore Riley Neal and junior Jack Milas – made some impressive throws in a red zone 7-on-7 drill. Neal connected with senior Cywettnie Brown for one score and drew a loud cheer from the rest of the offense after his perfect touchdown pass to senior tight end Sam Brunner a few plays later. Milas wasn't about to be outdone as he found freshman wide receiver Damon Hazelton Jr. in the corner of the end zone for another score. Junior linebacker Terin Solomon tallied the biggest highlight for the defense in that drill. He came down with a one-handed interception in the end zone.
DEFENSE MAKES POSITIVE PLAYS IN TEAM DRILLS: On the very first play pitting offense versus defense, senior defensive lineman Joshua Posley slipped through the offensive line to sack Neal. Senior linebacker Zack Ryan and junior defensive lineman Brian Whitaker also recorded sacks during the team session. Meanwhile, junior defensive lineman Reggie McGee recovered a fumble deep in offense territory and easily scored a touchdown.
OFFENSE HAS ITS FAIR SHARE OF SUCCESS IN TEAM DRILLS: On a 3rd-and-17 play, Neal stepped up in the pocket and found Brunner for a big gain. Later in that drive, junior running back Darian Green made a sharp cut on an outside run to score from about 10 yards out. Freshman running back Malik Dunner bounced outside on another productive running play that caused the sidelines to buzz. Senior wide receiver KeVonn Mabon took a quick screen pass from Neal, used his block wisely and raced 60 yards for a touchdown.
QUITE A FINISH: The offense faced a 4th-and-4 in the red zone on the final play of the day. Neal was flushed from the pocket, but scrambled and found Mabon in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.
SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE: Part of Saturday morning's practice will feature the first scrimmage session of the preseason. Practice is slated to run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Scheumann Stadium.
