June 02, 2016 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team has named Martez Hester, KeVonn Mabon, Sean Wiggins and Teddy Williamson as captains for the upcoming fall season.
Hester, a defensive back from Kennesaw, Georgia, was the only player to start all 12 games on the defensive side of the ball last fall. The senior finished third on the team in tackles (78) and twice posted double-digit tackles, including a season-high 13 stops at Western Michigan on Nov. 5. Hester has totaled 162 tackles and two interceptions in his three seasons as a Cardinal.
Mabon is the team's top returning wide receiver. The senior from St. Louis, Missouri, was a third team all-league performer as both a wide receiver and kick returner in 2015. He racked up 745 receiving yards as a junior, which was highlighted by a team season-high 150 yards in the win over UMass on Oct. 31. As a kick returner, Mabon averaged 27.2 yards per return, which ranked 16th nationally. He returned a fourth quarter kick 89 yards for a touchdown against Central Michigan on Oct. 24.
Wiggins was one of two Ball State players to earn first team all-conference accolades a year ago. In his first season as a starter, he finished second on the team and 14th in the league in tackles (95). The senior linebacker from Mint Hill, North Carolina, reached double figure tackles in four contests and posted nine stops in four others. One of his more impressive games came at Eastern Michigan on Sept. 19 when he notched interceptions on EMU's final two drives to help the Cardinals pull out a 28-17 victory.
Williamson has more than 130 carries from his running back position over the last three seasons. Hailing from O'Fallon, Missouri, the senior ranked fourth on the team in both carries (40) and rushing yards (136) in 2015. Williamson's best game last year came in the opener when he totaled 16 rushes for 74 yards. He finished with at least one carry in six contests and averaged 3.4 yards per carry.
Ball State kicks off its 2016 season on Friday, Sept. 2 at Georgia State. The home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 17 against Eastern Kentucky.
