May 10, 2016 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - It's championship week for the Ball State track & field program which will send 12 individuals and a pair of relays to the 2016 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 12-14) hosted by Toledo at the UT Outdoor Track & Field Facility.
Action in the three-day event begins Thursday at 10 a.m. for the Cardinals, with senior Marie Lumpkin entered in the hammer throw. Lumpkin enters the meet ranked seventh in the league in the event with a distance of 55.40m, which ranks her second in program history.
Also competing for the Cardinals on the opening day of the meet will be senior Michaela Hull in the javelin (noon) and sophomore Jessica Bryzek in the 10,000m run (7 p.m.). Hull is the 11th seed in the javelin at 38.01m, while Bryzek will be running the 10,000m for the first time this season.
Ball State will open the second day of competition Friday at 1 p.m., with freshman Jazmin Smith lining up for the start of the 100m hurdles. Smith is currently 12th in the MAC in the event after logging a career-best time of 14.10 at last Friday's Billy Hayes Invitational.
Sophomore Gabby Sims will continue the day at 1:20 p.m. as the 15th seed in the 400m dash (57.32), while freshman Peyton Stewart and sophomore Anna-Kay West follow at 2 p.m. in the 100m dash. Stewart is seeded seventh (11.80), while West enters at 14th (12.13).
Ball State's best event entering the meet looks to be the 400m hurdles, which will be contested at 3:20 p.m. Friday. A pair of Cardinals are projected to score in the event, with junior Kassidy Swenson ranked fifth (1:01.05) and senior Becca Kropf (1:01.11) right behind in sixth (1:01.11). Junior Olivia Ashba is also set to compete in the event, entering as the 11th seed (1:01.96).
Junior Ericka Rinehart will conclude the second day of competition for Ball State, entering the meet as the 18th seed in the 3000m steeplechase (4:40 p.m.)
Saturday's action will start with freshman Regan Lewis and Hull competing in the high jump and discus, respectively, at 10 a.m. Lewis is the 11th seed in the high jump (1.68m), while Hull is the 12th seed in the discus (45.05m).
On the track, the Cardinals will compete in both the 4x100m relay (1 p.m.) and the 4x400m relay (4:50 p.m.) Saturday, as well as any finals heats Ball State's student-athletes qualify for from Friday's running events.
In the fourth season of automatic qualifying standards, each event is capped at 20 participants. If 20 student-athletes did not post automatic marks in an event, entrants were selected going down the conference's performance list. The top eight performers from each event will be scored based on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale, with 10 points going to the event winner.
