April 15, 2016 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - On a picturesque day at University Track in the Briner Sports Complex, the Ball State track and field team opened competition in the Ball State Challenge with some solid performances in both the hammer and javelin throws Friday afternoon.
Seniors Marie Lumpkin and Michaela Hull started things for the Cardinals in the hammer throw, placing third (54.47m / 178'-8") and 10th (44.75m / 146'-10"), respectively, among the 14 competitors.
Hull returned to action in the javelin, placing second among a field of 12, with a throw of 36.13m (118'-6"). Freshman Regan Lewis followed close behind, placing fifth at 31.59 (103'-8").
In non-team action, 2014-15 Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Zach Riley returned to the cage, placing second in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.65m (179'-3”). Riley competed in track and field at Ball State from 1998-2002 and was an NCAA All-American in the hammer throw in 2001 and 2002. Riley placed seventh at the 2002 NCAA Championships with a throw of 212'-2”, and his throw of 215'-11” in a meet at Indiana that season set a Ball State outdoor school record. He became only the second track and field student-athlete in Ball State history to earn All-America First Team honors.
Action in the two-day Ball State Challenge picks up again at 10 a.m. Saturday with field events, beginning with the men's discus. Events on the track commence at 12:10 p.m. with the men's 5000m run, following a special Ball State senior day presentation. The meet is scheduled to conclude at 4:20 p.m. with the women's 4x400m relay.
