Ball State Baseball Sweeps MAC West Player of the Week Honors Again
April 11, 2016 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the second time in the last three weeks, the Ball State baseball team took home both the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week awards. Junior first baseman Caleb Stayton was tabbed the Player of the Week while junior left-handed pitcher Kevin Marnon earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Stayton, hailing from Goshen, Indiana, tied a career high with six RBIs in the 21-1 win over Western Michigan on April 10. In game one of the Sunday doubleheader, Stayton went 5-for-6 at the plate, which included two doubles and his first career triple. Stayton then went 4-for-5 in the second game of the doubleheader with a three-run home run. On April 5 against Xavier, he reached base all four times in the 5-4 win. Stayton currently ranks third nationally with 48 RBIs this season.
Marnon earned his second Pitcher of the Week award this spring thanks to tossing seven scoreless innings against Western Michigan on April 10. The lefty from Shelby Township, Michigan, only gave up four singles in the Ball State victory and held the Broncos to a .160 batting average. He induced two ground ball double plays early in the game to keep WMU off the scoreboard. Marnon leads the Cardinals with five quality starts in 2016.
Ohio infielder John Adryan (East Player) and Kent State pitcher Eric Lauer (East Pitcher) were the other award winners this week.
Ball State (21-12, 7-2 MAC), which has won six straight games, is back in action on Wednesday, April 13 with a non-conference game at Indiana. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
