December 06, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Seven members of the Ball State women's volleyball program were named to the 2016 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Volleyball Team as announced by the league office.
"I am very proud of our seven student-athletes who made the Academic All-MAC Team," head coach Kelli Miller said. "They have put in a lot of hard work and are committed to success on and off the court, which is exactly what we are striving for in our program."
Highlighting the Cardinals' seven award winners is redshirt senior outside attacker Mackenzie Kitchel (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) who earns the honor for the third consecutive season. Kitchel, who graduated from Ball State in the summer of 2015 with a degree in communications, is currently working on her master's in emerging media design and development.
Ball State also boasted a pair of two-time winners in redshirt junior outside attacker Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and junior defensive specialist Bailey Baumer (Batesville, Ind./Batesville).
First-time award winners for the Cardinals were sophomore defensive specialist Carly Cappello (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll Institute), sophomore outside attacker Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland), sophomore middle Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) and sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North).
To qualify for Academic All-MAC, student-athletes must maintain a 3.20 grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's matches. First-year players and junior college transfers are not eligible.
Ball State's seven honorees are now eligible for the MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete award which is voted on by the faculty athletic representatives from each MAC institution. The award is presented to student-athletes from the Academic All-MAC Team who have excelled in athletics and academics.
