January 03, 2017 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State University will hold a celebration to commemorate '25 Years of Worthen Arena' on Jan. 28. The men's basketball team is slated to host Western Michigan at 1 p.m., while the women's basketball team is set to take on Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m.
The Jan. 28th doubleheader will feature commemorative programs, customized cups and specially priced items at the concession stands, a student T-shirt giveaway and free cupcakes for fans courtesy of Gigi's Cupcakes while supplies last. Fans will want to be in their seats before the games start to see a video highlighting memorable games, concerts and events from the past 25 years.
Five championship basketball teams will be honored throughout the day – the 1980-81 men's team, the 1981-82 men's team, the 1985-86 men's team, the 2001-02 men's team and the 2006-07 women's team. Old uniforms, programs and other artifacts from the past 25 years will be on display on the concourse as well.
"The improvements to Worthen Arena over the last two years have greatly added to the fan experience," Ball Sate Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. "Visitors comment all of the time that the arena looks like it was built in the last 10 years. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful venue for our teams and guests."
Ball State Athletics would like our fans to help us select the top 25 basketball moments in Worthen Arena history. Simply tweet to @BallStateSports using #Worthen25 with your favorite memory. Cardinal fans who are not active on Twitter can always email their moment to bsusports@bsu.edu. Once compiled, the top 25 moments will be released on BallStateSports.com with the number one moment to be determined by a fan vote.
Worthen Arena, which originally opened as University Arena in 1992, was renamed Worthen Arena in honor of the former University president, John E. Worthen. The first official event to take place in the arena was a men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 15, 1992.
The arena is home to the Ball State men's and women's basketball teams, men's and women's volleyball teams, and gymnastics squad. Worthen Arena has also been the site of other special events such as concerts, trade shows and graduations.
