WVB's VanBeek Named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - - After a pair of strong performances last week, Ball State women's volleyball freshman middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week.
In helping guide the Cardinals to a 1-1 record with a narrow road loss at Toledo (Nov. 3) and a home sweep of Akron (Nov. 6), VanBeek averaged 2.25 kills per set and hit an astonishing .469 (18-3-32). She entered the week averaging 1.44 kills and hitting .236 on the year.
In Sunday's win over Akron, VanBeek smashed a career-high 10 kills and connected for a team leading .421 (10-2-19) attack percentage. Her play on offense helped the Cardinals finish the match with a season best .327 (45-9-110) attack percentage.
In Thursday's match at Toledo, VanBeek scored eight kills and hit a career best .538 (8-1-13). She also serve up an ace.
VanBeek's play at the net was also impressive last week as she averaged 0.88 blocks per set. She tied for team-high honors with four total blocks (one solo and three assists) at Toledo, while scoring three block assists versus Akron. The Cardinals finished both matches with 11.0 team blocks.
VanBeek is the third Ball State women's volleyball player to earn MAC weekly honors this season, joining sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) and freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) who swept the MAC West honors Sept. 19.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes out the 2016 regular season this weekend with home matches versus Western Michigan (Friday) and Northern Illinois (Saturday). Both contests are slated for 7 p.m. first serves and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
