Chris Fetter Joins Baseball Staff as Pitching Coach
January 07, 2016 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State University baseball coach Rich Maloney announced today that Chris Fetter has joined the staff as the team's pitching coach. Fetter spent the previous two years as a Major League Baseball scout for the Los Angeles Angels.
“With his outstanding playing and scouting background, Chris is going to be a great addition to our staff,” Maloney said. “He has the personality to be an excellent recruiter, and it will be a real treat for our pitchers to be under his tutelage.”
Fetter, hailing from nearby Carmel, Indiana played his collegiate baseball under Maloney at Michigan where he helped the Wolverines win three Big Ten championships and advance to four NCAA regionals. The right-handed pitcher was a 2006 Baseball America Freshman All-American, 2008 All-American, three-time All-Big Ten selection (2006, 2008, 2009) and 2009 team captain.
Fetter left Michigan as the program's career leader in innings pitched (332.1) while ranking third all-time in both wins (28) and strikeouts (281). He graduated from Michigan in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and proceeded to be drafted by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
After spending four years as a minor league pitcher in the Padres farm system, Fetter turned to the coaching ranks where he served on the 2013 San Antonio Missions (Double-A) staff.
In November 2013, Fetter took on a new challenge as a scout for the Los Angeles Angels. Fetter's main duties focused on analyzing professional players for potential trades and free-agent acquisitions.
"My wife, Jessica, and I couldn't be more excited to join the Ball State Cardinal family,” Fetter said. “I am grateful to Coach Maloney for entrusting me with his pitching staff, and I look forward to building upon the sound foundation Coach Linklater cultivated during his time in Muncie."
Ball State's 2016 season opener is slated for Feb. 19 in Arizona against Oregon State.
