JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - - Ball State outdoor track & field senior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) finished a stellar career by competing in the high jump Saturday evening at the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Lomax, who was competing at the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the third time in her career, tied for 45th overall among an elite field of high jumpers by successfully clearing the bar at a height of 1.65m (5-feet-5) in her third attempt. Lomax also had three chances at 1.70m (5-feet-7), but was unable to clear the bar to move forward in the competition.
The top twelve competitors from Saturday's high jump competition qualify for the 2015 NCAA National Championships held June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Morgan State's Jailah Mason and Akron's Claudia Garcia Jou tied for top honors in the East Preliminary Round by successfully clearing 1.82m (5-feet-11.5) on their first attempt. The remainder of the top 12 cleared 1.79m (5-feet-10.5) by at least their second attempt at the height.
A fifth year senior for the Cardinals in 2015, Lomax earned her spot in the high jump at the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Round by clearing a season-best height of 1.75m (5-feet-8.75) at the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Ball State April 17. She also cleared the same height at the Louisville Twilight (May 8) and the 2015 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 16).
In her first trip to the NCAA East Prelims as a freshman in 2011, Lomax placed 18th in the high jump with a mark of 1.75m (5-feet-8.75). She returned to the preliminary competition as a sophomore, placing 39th with a mark of 1.67m (5-foot-5.75). After sitting out the 2012-13 season to focus on her training as a dance major, Lomax returned to competition during the 2014 indoor season only to suffer a season-ending injury at the Hillsdale Invitational (Feb 7, 2014).
Lomax saw limited action in the 2014 outdoor season, competing in short sprints due to her injury, before returning to full competition for both the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor campaigns. At the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships, Lomax placed fourth in the pentathlon with a career-best score of 3,765 points, while her mark of 1.75m in the high jump at the outdoor league meet placed fifth.
Lomax enters the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Competition with a career-best outdoor high jump of 1.78m (5-foor-10) set when she won the event at the MAC Outdoor Championships (May 14, 2011) as a freshman. She also tied her career-best mark in the first meet of her sophomore outdoor campaign, the 22nd Annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Invitational (March 24, 2012).
