WVB Adds Two To MAC?s Top-Rated Recruiting Class
May 28, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State women's volleyball head coach Steve Shondell has rounded out the program's 2015 incoming class with commitments from Carly Cappello (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll Institute) and Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North).
“We are excited to add two defensive wizards to our 2015 roster,” Shondell said. “Ball State volleyball is known nationwide for precision ball control, and Carly and Lauren will help us continue to be one of the nation's best ball control teams. Not only do both girls pin point the pass, they are every bit as good keeping the ball off the floor with amazing acrobatic defensive plays. There is nothing more exciting in a volleyball match than watching spectacular game-saving plays being made on defense, and that is what these two defensive dynamos are all about.”
Cappello finished her four-year playing career at Bishop Noll Institute as the program's career leader in both kills (1,652) and digs (1,263). A 5-7 outside hitter for the Warriors, Cappello led the program to its first ever appearance in the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Class 2A State Championship match as a junior. As a senior, she became the program's first Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) First Team All-State honoree after smashing a program single-season record 650 kills, while adding 408 digs.
A three-time All-Greater South Shore Conference First Team honoree, Cappello helped guide Bishop Noll Institute to a 78-34 record over her career, including a 29-10 mark her senior season. A three-time team most valuable player, she was named both the Northwest Indiana Times and the Northwest Indiana Post Tribune Player of the Year as a senior. Cappello has also had a distinguished club career for the Ignite Elite, including helping guide both her 15 and 17 teams to second-place finishes at the USA Volleyball Nationals.
Schreiner finished her four-year playing career at Williamsville North as just the second player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career kill mark at 1,023. A 5-7 outside hitter for the Spartans, she also collected 2,257 career digs to help guide the program to a 2011 regional runner-up finish and a pair of Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) championships. For her play as a senior, she was named to the all-state fourth team.
A three-time All-ECIC First Team selection, Schreiner helped the Spartans tally an 18-11 overall record her senior season, including a 9-3 mark in league play. The team's most valuable player as both a junior and senior, she was named to the All-Western New York Large School First Team as a senior and Second Team as a junior. Schreiner has also had a distinguished club career for the Niagara Frontier, helping both her 15 and 16 teams qualify for open nationals. Schreiner also earned three letters in softball at Williamsville North, posting a .367 batting average as a junior while helping the team to a sectional runner-up finish.
Cappello and Schreiner, who were recruited to Ball State as defensive specialists, join three potent offensive weapons in Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove Ill./Kaneland), Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison Consolidated) and Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) who signed National Letters of Intent last November.
Combined, Ball State's 2015 recruiting class has been named one of the top 55 incoming classes in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. Ball State was listed as one of 25 teams earning “Highest Honorable Mention” accolades by the group, which is the highest ranking outside the top 30. No other Mid-American Conference school was ranked in the top 55.
