Women's Tennis Defeats Akron In MAC Action Sunday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team, picked up a 4-3 win over Akron in Mid-American Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
“I'm proud of my team today,” Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. “Akron has a talented team and that was a good first league win for us. Once again I think we improved today, especially at doubles and in the middle of our lineup. We are excited to hit the road for our match next Friday.”
Ball State (11-4, 1-1 MAC) took the early 1-0 advantage over the Zips after securing the doubles point. Bethany Moore and Courtney Wild paired up at the second position for a 6-2 win over Akron's Sophia Geier and Shannon Newnes. With one win under the Cardinals belt, Rosalinda Calderon alongside teammate Courtney Earnest clinched the point for Ball State after defeating, Martina Zerbola and Karolina Maksimova, 6-4, on court one.
In singles action, Ball State captured wins on courts one, two and five. Wild took down Maksimova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, for her third straight conference victory of the season on court one. Moore gave the Cardinals their third point of the match after beating Geier at the No. 5 position.
After that, Akron clawed its way back into the match, earning wins on courts three and six to make the score 3-2 with two matches remaining. Earnest clinch the fourth and final point for the Cardinals after beating Zerbola, 6-4, 6-3 on court two.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action at Northern Illinois Friday with a 2 p.m. (EST) first serve.
