Football Names Ingle, Richard, Smith Team Captains
April 27, 2015 | Football
Ball State head football coach Pete Lembo announced Ben Ingle, Jacob Richard and Darnell Smith have been selected by their teammates and coaching staff as captains for the 2015 Cardinals.
In addition to the three season captains, Ball State will select a fourth student-athlete to serve as game captain each week during the season.
“The current members of our football program made their feelings overwhelming clear in a recent vote and I am pleased with their selections,” Lembo said. “Darnell, Ben and Jake have consistently embraced the values and expectations of our football program and have applied them to all areas of their lives. From academics to community involvement to career development and, of course, on the field, these three student-athletes have really made the most of their opportunities at Ball State. We are very proud of them and look forward to working with them as they lead our team this summer and fall.”
Ingle, a fifth-year senior linebacker, was also a team captain last season. He played in 10 games in 2014 with nine starts and earned a third letter for the Cardinals. Richard, a fifth-year senior center, was also a team captain in 2014 and was an All-Mid-American Conference Third Team selection the past two seasons. Smith, a senior defensive tackle, was an All-MAC Third Team choice last season after starting all 12 games for the Cardinals.
“We have large junior and senior classes on this team as well as some mature younger players,” Lembo said. “We hope we can continue to develop leaders this summer and preseason. It is important we have a large group of leaders willing to encourage teammates and, if necessary, confront them as well in order for us to reach our potential this fall.”
Ball State opens the 2015 season Thursday, Sept. 3, in a home game at Scheumann Stadium vs. VMI.
