October 16, 2015 | Football
With 2015 marking the 50th anniversary of Ball State' trip to the 1965 Grantland Rice Bowl, the Hall-of-Fame team is being welcomed back to Muncie Saturday for the team's game with Georgia State. Members of the sqaud will be present on the field for the pregame coin toss.
The 1965 Grantland Rice Bowl marked Ball State's first trip to a postseason bowl game. More that 2,000 Cardinals fans made the trip to Murfreesboro, TN for the showdown that pitted BSU agaisnt an unbeaten Tennessee State team, quarterbacked by future NFL draft pick Eldridge Dickey.
Underdogs heading in, Ball State fell behind 6-0 before scoring two unanswered touchdowns through the air in the second quarter. The lead held until a 74-yard punt return score (and subsequent two-point conversion) tied the game with two minutes remaining. The game ended in that same tie when its final play, a pass by Tennessee Tech to the three yard line, was tackled as the clock dried out.
Cardinal Flashback digs deep into the archives to relive the memory of Ball State's first bowl trip as a member of the NCAA's College Division.
