MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her part in helping the Ball State women's volleyball team open Mid-American Conference play with a 1-1 record, redshirt junior middle hitter Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) has been named the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
Benson is now a four-time career MAC Player of the Week award winner, earning offensive honors three times, including one other time this season (Sept. 8), and defensive honors once over her career. She is also one of two Ball State players to earn MAC weekly honors this season, as redshirt junior libero Alex Fuelling (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/Morehead State) was named MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 22.
Over Ball State's two matches last week, Benson posted a team-best 26 kills, a .474 (26-5-47) attack percentage, seven total blocks and four service aces.
In the Cardinals' five-set victory at Western Michigan Friday, Benson led all players with 23.0 points which included 16 kills, six total blocks (two solo and four assists) and three service aces. She also connected for a team-high .429 (16-4-28) attack percentage.
In Saturday's loss at Northern Illinois, Benson tallied 10 kills and a .474 (10-1-19) attack percentage, to go along with a block and a service ace.
After playing 12 matches on the road over the last four weeks, Benson and the Ball State women's volleyball team return to Worthen Arena this weekend, when MAC West Division rivals Eastern Michigan (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Central Michigan (Saturday at 7 p.m.) travel to Muncie.
