September 22, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - For her part in helping guide the Ball State women's volleyball team to a 3-1 record last week, redshirt junior libero Alex Fuelling (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/Morehead State) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
Fuelling, who earns MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, is the second Ball State player to earn a league weekly award this season, joining redshirt junior middle hitter Hayley Benson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) who garnered offensive honors Sept. 8.
In just her second full week as the Cardinals' libero, Fuelling collected match-high dig totals in all four contests, including a career-high 24 digs in Ball State's thrilling 3-2 victory at in-state rival IPFW last Wednesday. She finished the week with 80 total digs for a team-leading 4.71 digs-per-set average.
In Friday's matches at the VCU Invitational, Fuelling tallied 19 digs in the 3-1 win over East Tennessee State and 15 digs in the sweep of Virginia. She concluded the tournament with 22 digs in Saturday's five-set loss at VCU.
Fuelling also recorded four service aces and a .919 reception percentage for the Cardinals last week.
Fuelling and the rest of the Ball State women's volleyball team turn their attention to Mid-American Conference play this weekend, as they open league play with matches at Western Michigan (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Northern Illinois (Saturday at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT).
