MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State University women's volleyball head coach Steve Shondell will be inducted as the first member of the Burris Laboratory School Athletics Hall of Fame Sept. 16 in honor of his distinguished career at the high school.
Shondell, who coached the Owls to four national championships and a 1,183-95 record over 34 years, will be honored when Burris hosts Seton Catholic, a high school in Richmond. The ceremony will be during a break between junior varsity and varsity contests at Ball Gym. The first match begins at 6 p.m.
A two-time National High School Coach of the Year, Shondell coached the Owls to 21 state championships, including 13 consecutive titles at the Indiana Class 2A level. In 2009, his final season with the program, he led Burris to a perfect 40-0 record and finished the season as the national runner-up.
“Teaching and coaching at Burris was one of the best experiences of my life,” Shondell said. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead 34 Golden Owl teams, to coach alongside so many outstanding assistants and to work with numerous wonderful administrators.”
Shondell was the unanimous choice of the hall of fame's selection committee, said Burris Athletic Director Chad Wlodarek.
“Burris Laboratory School is known nationally due to hard work and dedication of Steve Shondell,” Wlodarek said. “Not only was Steve a leader on the court, but he was an outstanding teacher in the classroom and mentor to hundreds of young men and women over the years. He also is well known for the development of our Delaware County volleyball legacy as one the founding members of the Munciana Volleyball program.”
A 1977 graduate of Ball State, Shondell returned to his alma mater in 2010 to lead the Cardinals' women's program. He also served as a men's volunteer assistant coach, working in tandem with his father, legendary volleyball coach Don Shondell, from 1991-98. The family's volleyball legacy is also connected to Purdue University, where his brothers Dave and John Shondell are the head coach and assistant head coach, respectively, of the women's volleyball program.
