Track & Field Opens Indoor Season Saturday at UIndy

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State track & field program opens its 2014-15 indoor season Saturday, when it travels to the University of Indianapolis for the Jerry England Alumni Open. Action in the field events is set to being at 4 p.m. at the Athletic Recreational Center (ARC).
The women's weight throw will be the first event of the day, while action on the track gets underway at 4:30 p.m. with the 4x800m relay. In addition to the Cardinals and host Grayhounds, other colleges represented in the meet include Anderson, Franklin, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lindsey Wilson and Marian.
Ball State will be competing in the Jerry England Alumni Open for the second consecutive season, and returns five defending individual event winners from last year's meet. Overall, Ball State's student-athletes picked up seven event wins at last season's running of the non-scored event.
Junior Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich.) enters the meet as the defending champion in the 800m dash with a time of 2:19.94 in last season's running. Junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) is the defending long jump champion with a distance of 5.62m (18'-5.25”).
Senior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) took top billing in the pole vault (3.45m / 11'-3.75”) at last year's Jerry England Alumni Open, while junior Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) opened last year's meet with a first-place showing in the weight throw (16.13m / 52'-11”).
Rounding out the list of returning individual event winners is senior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport), who placed first in the high jump at 1.70m (5'-7”).
In addition to the individual event winners, three members of the first-place 4x400m relay also return to compete in the meet this season in sophomores Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop), Olivia Ashba (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood) and Ariel Hune (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).
After Saturday's meet, the complete Ball State squad will not return to action until after the holiday break, when the team is slated to travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, for the BG Opener (Jan. 10).
