Cardinal Flashback Episode 1: Petie Jackson
December 18, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Take a look back into the history of the Ball State men's basketball program with the newest All-Access feature, Cardinal Flashback. Throughout the season, veterans of the Ball State basketball program will recount their memories and experiences in Muncie, reliving the past of the Cards' historic program.
On the first edition, Patrick 'Petie' Jackson revisits the 2000 NCAA Tournament and the 2001 'Wowie in Maui.' Jackson was a sophomore during the team's NCAA run and a senior when it shipped to Hawaii.
After beating a Miami team in the MAC championship that was coaching in part by James Whitford, the Cardinals faced UCLA in the 2000 NCAA's. Ball State led at the half before eventually falling, 65-57. Two seasons later the teams met again in Maui. This time around Ball State not only felled the Bruins, but also the Kansas Jayhawks -- both teams ranked in the top five nationally. The magical run ended, however, at the hands of then No. 1 Duke in the Maui Invitational title game.
Jackson, an Academic All-American, would finish his career as Ball State's all-time leading three point shooter. His record stood more than a decade, until Jauwan Scaife and Jesse Berry broke it in 2013 and 2014.
