Track & Field Set For Gladstein Invitational
January 23, 2014 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State indoor track & field team continues its run toward the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships Friday, when it opens competition in the two-day Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana.
Action gets underway at the Gladstein Fieldhouse at noon Friday with the 60m hurdle portion of the pentathlon. General field events are slated to start at 3:30 pm with the shot put, while track events commence at 4:45 with the 3000m run. Action will start up again Saturday with the women's weight throw at 11 a.m.
In addition to the Cardinals and host Hoosiers, a total of 18 teams are expected to be represented at the meet, including MAC foe Kent State on the women's side.
Ball State is competing in the Gladstein Invitational for the seventh consecutive season, with BSU's student-athletes posting 15 career-best efforts in the meet a year ago.
Last season's Gladstein Invitational also saw then-freshman Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) post the program's first MAC Indoor Championship qualifying time of the season as she placed ninth in the 5000m run with what still stands as a career-best time of 17:30.74.
This season, Ball State already has three student-athletes with MAC Indoor Championship qualifying efforts, with the latest coming from redshirt sophomore Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) in the long jump. Crawford's career-best leap of 18'-11.75 (5.78m) at last weekend's IWU Invitational currently ranks as the fourth-best long jump in the league this season.
In the season-opening Gerry England Alumni Open, Ball State's high jumping duo of redshirt junior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) posted MAC Indoor Championship qualifying marks. Lomax won the high jump by successfully clearing 5'-7" (1.70m) in her hometown meet, while Austin placed second at 5'-6" (1.68m). The efforts rank fourth and sixth in the league, respectively.
Entering this weekend's Gladstein Invitational, Ball State's student-athletes are ranked in the top 30 in the league in their respective events a total of 29 times, including eight top 10 efforts.
