Women's Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team was one of a record 533 teams to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season.
"This a great honor for the Ball State women's volleyball program," says Ball State head coach Steve Shondell. "It speaks volumes about the hard work our student-athletes put forth both on the court and in the classroom. As a coach, I could not be prouder of the manner in which our team represented Ball State University."
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
As a team, the Cardinals posted a combined 3.321 grade-point average for the 2011-12 academic year, with 11 of the team's 15 letterwinners earning a 3.0-or-higher. Then senior Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall semester, while current junior Lauren Grant (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) tallied a 4.0 GPA in the spring. Then senior Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the squad with a combined 3.831 GPA over both semesters.
