Football Spring Preview
March 21, 2012 | Football
Ball State's football program began its Spring Practice which concludes Sat., April 21, with the annual Spring Game at 3 p.m. at Scheumann Stadium.
The Cardinals, under the direction of second-year head coach Pete Lembo, welcome back 13 starters from a 2011 team that posted a 6-6 overall record and a 4-4 mark in Mid-American Conference action.
"Our first year went about as smoothly as any of us could have expected given the circumstances," Lembo says. "These student-athletes had dealt with an inordinate amount of turnover on the coaching staff in recent years. They had also come off two tough seasons and team morale was an issue. We worked very hard to build trust, provide some stability and get everyone on the same page in terms of our plans to advance the program. Our success in 2011 gives us a lot of momentum moving forward both internally and externally."
Ball State will face Clemson, Indiana, South Florida and Army in non-conference action next fall, while the MAC schedule is yet to be finalized.
"It is a very, very difficult out-of-conference schedule," Lembo says. "We have three Bowl Championship Subdivision opponents in a row in September and Army on the road in late October. Clemson and South Florida have some of the best athletes in the country on their rosters. I am also sure Indiana will be improved as their staff enters their second year in Bloomington."
All Spring Practices are open to the public.
