March 11, 2012 | Softball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Ball State freshman outfielder/designated player Hanne Stuedemann (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 28-March 6, as announced Sunday (March 11) afternoon by the league office.
Stuedemann is the third Ball State student-athlete to earn MAC West Player of the Week honors this season, joining sophomores Taylor Rager (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) who earned the honors Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, respectively. Senior pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) was also named the MAC West Pitcher of the Week Feb. 21.
In helping guide the Cardinals to a 3-2 record at last weekend's Citrus Classic, Stuedemann put together one of the best weekends for a freshman in program history, reaching base in 11 of 13 plate appearances for a .846 on base percentage over four games. Stuedemann, who officially hit .667 (4-for-6) at the Citrus Classic, also drew six walks and was hit by a pitch to reach base 11 total times.
She blasted her first career home run in the win over Temple (a two-run shot), tallied her first career triple in the win over Lipscomb (to bring home one run) and added her first career double against LIU Brooklyn (driving home two runs).
Both her five RBI and five runs scored were tournament-highs for the Cardinals. She recorded at least one hit, run and walk in all four games.
The Ball State softball team wrapped up its recent spring break trip with an 8-2 overall record, as Stuedemann led the team with a .542 (13-for-24) batting average. She tallied 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three home runs, two doubles and a triple over the 10 games, while posting a 1.083 slugging percentage. She also drew seven walks and was hit by a pitch to finish with a .656 on base percentage.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Saturday, March 17, when it opens play at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, with a 3 p.m. first pitch versus Loyola-Chicago. Ball State will also play Dayton at 5 p.m. on the opening day of the tournament.
