MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State softball senior right-handed pitcher Audrey Workman (Wickenburg, Ariz./Wickenburg) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week, as announced today by the league office.
"I thought Audrey threw the ball really well last week," said Ball State head coach Craig Nicholson. "She had some tough luck in a couple spots, but overall she turned in three solid efforts on the mound, including having us on the verge of upsetting the fifth-ranked team in the country in Missouri."
Workman, who earns pitcher of the week honors for the first time in her Ball State career, made three appearances on the hill for BSU at the Quality Inn Classic, walking away from the tournament with a 1-2 record and a 2.52 ERA in 16.2 innings of work. She also struck out 10 batters over the three appearances.
Workman opened the season by nearly pitching the Cardinals to a win over No. 5/6 Missouri. In the contest, she limited the Tigers to just five hits and three earned runs over six innings of work.
She followed that effort with a strong outing versus Nicholls State, picking up her first win of the season by limiting NSU to eight hits and one run over seven innings. She also collected a season-high seven strikeouts in the victory.
In a relief appearance versus Troy, Workman pitches 3.2 innings and allowing two hits and a pair of earned runs.
Workman and the Ball State softball team returns to action this weekend, when it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial. BSU opens the three-day tournament Friday, with games versus Troy (11 a.m.) and Belmont (3:30 p.m.).
