INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - Senior middle blocker Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) tallied a career-high nine total blocks to help lead the Ball State women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 27-25) sweep of IUPUI Tuesday evening at the IUPUI Gymnasium.
"It is never easy on the road," said Ball State head coach Steve Shondell. "To come out and win the first two sets the way we did was encouraging. Overall, it was a good performance tonight. IUPUI picked up their game late and made us work hard to win the last game in overtime."
Brandl set the tone early with block assists on the first three plays, as the Cardinals (3-0) led the entire first and second sets. The Jaguars (0-5) battled back for a tight third frame, but kills from senior right side Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and sophomore middle blocker Mindy Marx (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven H.S.) ended the set at 27-25 and completed BSU's sweep.
"Kelsey came to play tonight," said Shondell. "She set the tone with some stuff blocks early. It was great to see us finish the night with 13 team blocks."
In addition to her career-high nine block assists, Brandl tagged seven kills, added five digs and posted one of BSU's three service aces on the evening. Boyd finished the night with seven kills and five blocks, while Marx added four kills and four total blocks.
Sophomore outside attacker Kylee Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North H.S.) also turned in a strong performance for the Cardinals, recording her eighth career double-double with match highs of 16 kills and 13 digs. Baker also finished the night with a .394 (16-3-33) hitting mark and three block assists.
Senior setter Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) added her 33rd career double-double by handing out a match-best 38 assists to go along with 12 digs. She also tallied four kills on five swings, while adding two block assists.
Sophomore libero Catie Fredrich (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls H.S.) added 10 digs in the victory.
Moriah Fair led the Jaguars with 14 kills, while Alexis Meeks and Lindsey Weber tied for team-high honors with 11 digs apiece.
For the match, the Cardinals out-hit the Jaguars .292 (46-13-113) to .114 (36-22-123), while holding a 58-43 advantage in digs. Ball State also out-blocked IUPUI 13.0-6.0 for the night.
