MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team was one of a record 478 teams honored with an American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2010-2011 season, the AVCA announced.
"There is no better way to close the book on a Mid-American Conference championship volleyball year than to be named one of the nation's best academic teams," said head coach Steve Shondell. "For our team of 16 student-athletes to achieve together over a 3.3 grade-point average is a great testimony to their commitment and dedication both on the court and in the classroom. As a coach, I could not be prouder of the manner in which our team represented Ball State University."
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
As a team, the Cardinals posted a combined 3.351 grade-point average for the 2010-11 academic year, with 11 of the 16 letterwinners earning a 3.3-or-higher. Senior libero Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) led the Cardinals with a 3.972 GPA, including posting a perfect 4.00 GPA for the fall semester in which she helped guide the Cardinals to a 24-5 overall record and the MAC Regular Season Championship.
