May 10, 2011 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Three Ball State Softball players have earned 2010-11 Capital One Academic First and Second-Team All-District honors, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday afternoon.
Senior shortstop Alicia Barkley, senior right fielder Alyssa Collins and sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders join Northern Illinois' Carly Norton as four softball players from the Mid-American Conference to earn Capital One Academic District Five honors.
Barkley owns a 3.61 GPA as an exercise science major and stands as a first-year recipient of the honor. The First-Team All-District award caps an astounding career with the Cardinals, as the four-year letterwinner has earned 2010 Mid-American Conference All-Tournament Team, 2010 Second-Team All-MAC, 2010 MAC All-Academic, 2009 MAC Player of the Year, 2009 First-Team All-MAC, 2009 NFCA First-Team All-Region and 2008 MAC All-Freshman Team honors.
Barkley, a native of Oklahoma City, Okla., has started every game in her career with the Cardinals in the shortstop position and she enters tournament play with a .357 batting average, including eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 17 RBI and a team-high 20 stolen bases. In the MAC, Barkley ranks first in runs scored (49) and third in hits (70).
Collins owns a 3.43 GPA as a special education major and is a first-year recipient of the honor. Combined with 2009 Second-Team All-MAC accolades, the Second-Team All-District honor tops a spectacular career with the Cardinals, as the four-year letterwinner also stands as a member of the 2009 MAC All-Tournament Team.
Collins has started every game in her career at Ball State as either an outfielder or at DP. This season, the Fortville, Ind. native leads the squad with a .411 batting average, including 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 25 RBI. Collins ranks first in the league in hits (79), fifth in total bases (95) and is tied for fifth in runs scored (39).
With a 3.67 GPA as a pre-medicine major, Sanders leads the Cardinals from the circle as she has made 35 appearances with a 3.03 ERA in 184.2 innings of work. The native of Lynnville, Ind. ranks second in the MAC in innings pitched (184.2), second in games started (28), second in complete games (19), third in wins (17-14), fourth in strikeouts (142), fifth in appearances (35) and is tied for fifth in shutouts with two.
Sanders earned MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in her career (March 22) after tallying a perfect 3-0 mark during the Radford Invitational. The two-year letterwinner recorded a 1.47 ERA after pitching 19.0 innings and allowing for 15 hits and six walks, in addition to recording 13 strikeouts in wins against Delaware, Pittsburgh and Robert Morris. Versus the Blue Hens and Panthers, Sanders allowed for a combined nine hits and four walks, in addition to striking out nine batters.
Academic All-District selections must maintain a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA and have played 50 percent or more of their team's contests as a starter or significant reserve.
First‐team Academic All‐District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America Team ballot, where first‐, second‐ and third‐team All‐America honorees will be selected later this month.
