April 01, 2011 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's outdoor track & field team will look to build on a successful opening weekend when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., this weekend for the Seventh-Annual Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted by Purdue.
The meet will start Friday at 3 p.m. with the men's and women's hammer throws, while the remainder of the action scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rankin Track and Field.
Several of the same school's from last year's Poehlein Invitational return to West Lafayette this weekend, including Big East representatives Louisville and Notre Dame. Others set to attend include Butler, Ball State, DePaul, Valparaiso, Illinois-Chicago and IPFW, while limited squads from Illinois and IUPUI will be on hand as well.
Last season, the Cardinals competed in just six of the 20 events at the Mike Poehlein Invitational due to wet and windy weather condition. However, the Cardinals were able to post six top-10 efforts in the meet despite their limited participation.
Sophomore Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain Ohio) was the top performer at last year's meet, posting a time of 57.57 in the 400m dash to place sixth overall. With her time of 58.81 in the 400m dash at last weekend's Polar Bear Invitational, Smith enters the week ranked 11th in the Mid-American Conference in the event.
Smith also enters the week ranked fourth in the MAC in the 200m dash (25.18) and is on two top-five ranked relay squads.
Redshirt sophomore Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) also turned in a strong showing in the 400m dash, entering the weekend ranked sixth in the MAC at 25.44. Her 100m dash time of 12.45 is currently ninth in the conference.
