
Men's S&D Finishes Sixth At MAC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team added one more school record on the final day of competition at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, finishing the three-day event hosted by Southern Illinois at the Student Recreation Center in sixth place with 239 total points.
Buffalo won the seven-team meet with a total of 763.5 points, and was followed by Eastern Michigan (685), Southern Illinois (613.5), Miami (485), Missouri State (432), BSU and Evansville (126).
Ball State's biggest story of the day came in the meet's final individual swimming event, when junior Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) broke the school record in the 200 butterfly with a finals time of 1:51.02 to place ninth overall with nine points. His mark broke the 23-year-old record of 1:51.47 set by Eric Rauscher at the 1988 MAC Championships
The third-day finals started with the meet's longest event, the 1,650 freestyle. In the event, the Cardinals captured five points, with senior Mark Golden (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park H.S.) earning four for his 13th-place time of 16:16.81. Sophomore Nicholas Stevens (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle H.S.) added one for his 16th-place swim of 16:37.55.
After failing to place anyone in the top 16 in the 200 backstroke, junior Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.) got the Cardinals back on track with a five-point, 12th-place showing of 45.85 in the 100 freestyle.
The Cardinals followed with their biggest individual event of the third day, with three swimmers combining for 14 points in the 200 breaststroke.
Paving the way for the Cardinals in the 200 breaststroke was junior Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.) who became the only BSU swimmer to reach a true finals heat, by earning the eighth seed in the prelims with the third-fastest individual time in the event in program history at 2:05.44. His finals time of 2:06.48 would place him eighth overall, give BSU 11 points.
Also scoring in the 200 breaststroke for Ball State were sophomore David Wood (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill H.S.) and junior Mark Nau (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) who placed 15th (2:09.77 / 2 points) and 16th (2:12.54 / 1 points), respectively.
In addition to Krupa's school-record, nine-point effort in the 200 butterfly, high school teammate and BSU classmate Tony DeBrota (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) earned three points with a 14th-place finals time of 1:54.44.
On the three-meter diving board, senior Jeremy Whited (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) paced the Cardinals with a 15th-place finals score of 231.10 to earn two points.
Ball State closed out the meet and the 2010-11 season with senior Josh Young (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North H.S.), sophomore Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic H.S.), freshman Michael Oaks (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) and Schroeder placing fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a 28-point time of 3:05.44.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team scored 99 points on the second day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships to remain sixth in the seven-team event hosted by Southern Illinois at the Student Recreation Center.
Buffalo continues to lead the meet with 539 points and is followed by host SIU (425), Eastern Michigan (399), Miami (314), Missouri State (265), BSU and Evansville (109).
The Cardinals opened second-day finals with a sixth-place finish and 26 points in the 200 medley relay, as sophomore Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic H.S.), junior Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.), junior Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) and junior Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.) combined for a time of 1:32.75.
Ball State collected seven points in the 400 IM finals as juniors Tony DeBrota (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) and Andrew Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) placed 13th (4:10.24 / 4 points) and 14th (4:15.99 / 3 points), respectively.
Krupa followed with the second-fastest individual time in program history in the 100 butterfly at 49.89 to place ninth overall and pick up nine more points for the Cardinals.
In the 200 freestyle finals, Schroeder earned three more points for BSU with a 14th-place effort of 1:42.90 in his finals heat.
The biggest individual point event for Ball State in the meet so far came next in the 100 breaststroke as four BSU swimmers placed in the top 15 to earn a total of 22 points. Sophomore David Wood (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill H.S.) led the charge with a ninth-place, nine-point, time of 57.46 which was the third-fastest individual time in program history.
McNeeley was close behind, taking 10th and earning eight points for this time of 57.50. Rounding out BSU's scorers in the 100 breaststroke were junior Mark Nau (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Snider H.S.) in 14th (59.18 / 3 points) and freshman Joseph Morris (South Bend, Ind./Clay H.S.) in 15th (59.22 / 2 points).
Weber rounded out Ball State's individual scorers on the day, placing 12th in the 100 backstroke to earn five points for his time of 51.77.
The Cardinals concluded the second day of the meet with a fifth-place effort of 6:51.33 in the 800 freestyle relay to earn 28 points. Freshman Michael Oaks (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community H.S.) led off the relay and was followed by senior Mark Golden (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park H.S.), sophomore Nicholas Stevens (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle H.S.) and senior Josh Young (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North H.S.).
Action in the 2011 MAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships concludes Saturday, with preliminary action beginning at Noon (CT) and finals at 7 p.m. (CT).

DAY ONE RECAP
CARBONDALE, Ill. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team scored in all six opening day events, pulling in 74 points and one school record, at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Southern Illinois at the Student Recreation Center.
Buffalo leads the seven-team, three-day meet with 256 points, and is followed by Southern Illinois (186), Eastern Michigan (180), Miami (162), Missouri State (134), BSU and Evansville (56).
The Cardinals opened the first day of finals with a seventh-place finish from the 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic H.S.), senior Josh Young (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North H.S.), junior Tony DeBrota (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) and junior Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.) who combined for a time of 1:24.84 to pick up 24 points.
In the first individual event, senior Mark Golden (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park H.S.) turned in a 14th-place effort in the 500 freestyle, earning three points for the Cardinals with a time of 4:37.98.
Junior Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) followed with a 10th-place effort of 1:52.79 in the 200 IM, picking up seven more points for BSU.
Schroeder followed with Ball State's best individual effort of the first day, placing ninth in the 50 freestyle to earn nine points with a time of 20.77.
Out of pool and over at the diving well, senor Jeremy Whited (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) earned three points for the Cardinals with a 14th-place score of 213.70.
The final event of the day was the best for the Cardinals, with Weber, junior Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.), Krupa and Schroeder earning fifth place and 28 points in the 400 medley relay with a school-record clocking of 3:22.05. The effort topped the previous mark of 3:23.07 set at the 2004 MAC Championships.
Action in the 2011 MAC Championships continues later this afternoon, with preliminary action set to begin at Noon (CT).
