T&F Opens Outdoor Campaign With Six Event Wins

MARION, Ind. - - The Ball State track and field team opened its 2011 outdoor season with six event wins and 18 top five finishes at the 24th Annual Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
In addition to the Cardinals, athletes from Adrian, Butler, Findlay, Hillsdale, Indianapolis, Indiana Wesleyan and Valparaiso competed in the non-scored 20-event meet.
Sophomore Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) was the Cardinals top performer on the day, earning first-place finishes in both the 200m dash (25.18) and the 400m dash (58.81).
Junior Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) completed a sweep of the three dash events, placing first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.45. Taylor also placed second in the 200m dash (25.44).
Taylor also joined freshman Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport H.S.), junior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) and senior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) on the first-place 4x100m relay which posted a time of 48.15.
Lorenz would add a first-place showing in the 100m hurdles (15.10) to her victory in the 4x100 relay, while also placing fifth in the 200m dash (25.68).
Lomax rounded out BSU's event winners with a victory in the high jump (5-3).
The Ball State outdoor track & field team returns to action next weekend, when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for the two-day Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted by Purdue.
