Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season Saturday

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's track & field team opens its 2011 outdoor season Saturday at the aptly named Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. Temperatures at the opening gun, which is slated for 10 a.m., are forecasted to be around 27 degrees with a wind chill making it fell like 16 degrees.
In addition to the Cardinals and host Wildcats, competitors from Adrian, Butler, Findlay, Hillsdale, Indianapolis, King and Valparaiso are slated to compete in the non-scored meet.
Saturday's event marks the second consecutive season Ball State will compete in the Polar Bear Invitational. Last season, the Cardinals turned in 24 top 10 efforts at the meet, including three event victories.
Looking to guide the Cardinals at this year's meet are a trio of point scorers from the 2011 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Multi-event specialist Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany), who is a junior eligibility wise for the outdoor season, led the Cardinals at the league's indoor meet with a second-place finish in the pentathlon by scoring 3779 points over the five events.
Also scoring for BSU at the 2011 MAC Indoor Championships were senior Ra'Jae Marable (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) with a sixth-place time of 8.66 in the 60m hurdles and freshman Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport H.S.) who tied for sixth-place by clearing 5-5 in the high jump.
