
Baseball Falls At No. 21 College Of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Ball State baseball team suffered a 12-1 defeat at 21st ranked College of Charleston Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point. The Cardinals will wrap up their annual spring break trip this weekend with a three-game series at Charlotte beginning Friday afternoon.
College of Charleston right-hander Robert Jeroszko improved to 1-1 on the season as he posted 7.0 strong innings. Jeroszko limited the Cardinals to one run on five hits while striking out four batters. He combined with two other Cougar pitchers to limit the Cardinals to six hits on the afternoon.
Freshman left-hander Nestor Bautista (New York, N.Y./George Washington) made his first career start for the Cardinals and picked up the loss. Bautista allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work while walking three batters.
The College of Charleston (12-2) scored seven runs in the first four innings, including posting five-run inning in the fourth to chase Bautista from the game. The Cougars posted four hits in the fourth inning, all of which were of the extra base variety with a home run and three doubles.
After the Cougars took an 8-0 lead, the Cardinals ended the shutout effort in the top of the seventh inning. Redshirt freshman Billy Wellman (Portland, Ind./Jay County) ripped his first career home run high over the left field wall for the Cardinals' lone run of the afternoon. CofC added two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to close out the afternoon.
Freshman Kenny Mahala (Highland, Ind./Andrean) paced the Cardinals with two hits in the loss while the Cougars got eight hits from their first four hitters in the lineup.
Ball State returns to action this weekend with three games against Charlotte. The Cardinals begin the series Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
