Softball Tops Kennesaw State at Phyllis Rafter Tourney

WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Ball State Softball opened the first day of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial with a 6-3 victory against host Kennesaw State at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex. The win marks the second-consecutive season in which the Cardinals' defeated the Owls in this tournament.
Senior center fielder Lisa Rozanski (Tampa, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) put Ball State on the board first in the top of the third inning. After two base hits, Rozanski stole third and scored after an error from Kennesaw State's catcher, sophomore Morgan Chapman.
Seconds later, the Owls' pitcher Amanda Henderson walked senior right fielder Alyssa Collins (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon) and freshman Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) smacked a single to right field to bring senior shortstop Alicia Barkley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City) around to score. Then with two outs, sophomore Amanda Carpenter (Santee, Calif./Santana) doubled to center field, sending Collins home, and Gilbert scored after freshman Audrey Bickel (Munster, Ind./Andrean) reached first base on a fielders' choice.
Kennesaw State responded in the bottom of the third inning as freshman Bianca Durant doubled down the left field line and sent Chapman around to home plate.
Ball State continued its scoring opportunities in the fourth inning as junior catcher Amanda Montalto (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) blasted a home run to right center field. Rozanski scored Ball State's final run of the contest after a Collins base hit through the middle sent her home.
Kennesaw State managed to decrease the scoring margin in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sharon Swanson's single to left field ignited a two-run streak for the Owls.
Ball State outhit Kennesaw State, 14-7, while Montalto paced the Cardinals at the plate after going 3-for-4, in addition to her home run. Rozanski and Barkley accumulated two hits in four appearances and a stolen base each, while Collins and Gilbert went 2-for-3 and 3-for-4, respectively. From inside the circle, sophomore pitcher Audra Sanders (Lynnville, Ind./Tecumseh) allowed seven hits and collected four strikeouts in seven innings.
Ball State will resume play Saturday with contests versus Tennessee State at 10:30 a.m. and Mercer at 1 p.m. and will face Bowling Green at 10:30 a.m. and Georgia State at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Head coach Craig Nicholson and the team open the home portion of the 2011 season in a doubleheader versus Dayton at the BSU Softball Complex, beginning at 3 p.m. on March 24.
