
Women's S&D Wraps Up MAC Championships

ATHENS, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team collected its 10th school record on the final day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
The Cardinals finished the four-day event with 261.5 points to place eighth among the eight-team field. Host Ohio won the meet with 669.5 points and was followed by Toledo (630.5), Miami (561), Eastern Michigan (385), Buffalo (328.5), Akron (312.5), Bowling Green (312.5) and BSU.
Ball State's top event of the final day was the 200 backstroke, with freshmen Mallory Miles (Holland, Ind./Southridge H.S.) and Haley Richter (Roanoke, Ind./Columbia City H.S.) combining for 18 points.
Miles scored 11 points in the event with an eighth-place finals time of 2:01.45. In the preliminary round, Miles turned in a school-record time of 2:00.91, topping her own mark of 2:03.18 set at the EMU Invitational (Dec. 4, 2010). Richter earned seven points with a 10th-place swim of 2:02.13 in the finals, which was good enough to be the second-best individual mark in BSU annals.
In the 200 breaststroke, freshman Bridgette Ruehl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell H.S.) picked up six points with an 11th-place effort of 2:18.62. Classmate Stacey Wierman (Munster, Ind./Munster H.S.) added one point in the event with a 16th-place time of 2:23.11.
Senior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) added 13 points in the 200 butterfly, with BSU's best individual finish of the day as she placed sixth with a time of 2:01.52. The effort was the second-best individual time in program history.
In the three-meter diving finals, junior Whitney Adams (Danville, Ind./Danville H.S.) earned 11 points with an eight-place score of 236.10. Senior Jessica Elzinga (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) added four points with a 13th-place effort of 228.70.
The Cardinals concluded the four-day meet with a fourth-place, 30-point showing in the 400 freestyle relay, as senior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.), Richter, Miller, Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) combined for a time of 3:26.35.

DAY THREE RECAP
ATHENS, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team set six school records on the third day of the 2011 MAC Championships, bringing their three-day total to nine at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
Despite the six school records, the Cardinals remain in eighth among the eight-team field with 178.5 points. Host Ohio remains in first for the second straight day with 443.5 points, followed by Toledo (406.5), Miami (358), Eastern Michigan (261), Akron (222.5), Buffalo (219.5), Bowling Green (205.5) and BSU.
In the 400 individual medley, freshman Mallory Miles (Holland, Ind./Southridge H.S.) earned 13 points for the Cardinals, placing sixth in the finals with a time of 4:21.27. In the prelims, she posted a school-record clocking of 4:20.22, topping the previous mark of 4:25.41 set by Mary Ehresman in the 2009 MAC Championships.
A pair of Cardinals scored in the 100 butterfly, with freshman Haley Richter (Roanoke, Ind./Columbia City H.S.) earning nine points with a ninth-place time of 54.63 and senior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) earning three for a 14th-place effort of 56.35.
Both Richter's finals and prelim (55.31) times in the 100 butterfly were school records, bettering the previous mark of 55.79 set by Gramelspacher in 2009 MAC Championships. Gramelspacher also bettered her previous record with a prelim effort of 55.70.
Two more BSU swimmers picked up points in the 200 freestyle, as senior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney) took 13th and earned four points with a school-record time of 1:50.66, bettering the mark of 1:51.13 set by Petra Mauritzon Dec. 6, 1996. Freshman Emily Wisolek (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge H.S.) added two points for her 15th-place clocking of 1:51.02. Earlier in the meet, Wisolek turned in a then-school-record time of 1:50.81, which now ranks second in the BSU record books after Bylsma's finals time.
The Cardinals picked up five more points in the 100 breaststroke, with freshman Bridgette Ruehl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell H.S.) placing 12th with a school-record effort of 1:03.94, bettering her own mark of 1:04.12 set at the EMU Invitational.
The best event, and the most sought after record was the 100 backstroke, as all three scoring BSU swimmers broke the previous school record of 56.65 set by Miles at the EMU Invite. In the finals, Miles placed fifth overall to garner 14 points with a school-record time of 55.79.
Junior Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) took home eighth in the finals of the 100 back with a time of 56.46, after briefly reclaiming the school record she held entering the season with a clocking of 56.82 in the preliminary round.
Freshman Jackie Iglesias (Aurora, Ind./West Aurora H.S.) rounded out BSU's trio of scorers in the 100 back with a 12th-place, six-point final wall touch of 56.42.
Ball State's final school record of the day came in the 400 medley relay, with Saulters, Ruehl, Richter and Bylsma combining for a time of 3:45.69. The previous record was 3:49.49 set at the 2009 MAC Championships.
In the prelim round of the 3-meter diving competition, junior Whitney Adams (Danville, Ind./Danville H.S.) earned the seventh seed in the finals with a score of 244.50. Senior Jessica Elzinga (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) placed 12th in the prelims with a score of 224.30.
Action concludes in the 2011 MAC Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with preliminary action in the 200 backstroke.

DAY TWO RECAP
ATHENS, Ohio - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team scored in three of five events on the second day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by Ohio University at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
Despite the strong efforts, the Cardinals fell to eighth among the eight-team field with 85 points. Host Ohio moved to first in the four-day event with 271 points and is followed by Toledo (195), Miami (175), Eastern Michigan (164), Akron (146), Buffalo (138.5), Bowling Green (131.5) and BSU.
Senior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a 16th-place effort in the 50 freestyle, posting a finals time of 23.78 to earn one point.
BSU's top event of the day was one-meter diving, with BSU picking up 10 points. Junior Whitney Adams (Danville, Ind./Danville H.S.) led the charge, tying for ninth with a score of 244.30 to pick up eight points.
Senior diver Jessica Elzinga (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) added two more points on the one-meter board with a 15th-place score of 209.85.
The Cardinals ended the second day of competition with a sixth-place showing in the 200 medley relay with freshman Betsy Bowen (Bremen, Ind./Bremen H.S.), freshman Mia Miller (Goshen, Ind./Goshen H.S.), sophomore Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) and Bylsma combining for a time of 1:33.77. The effort was just shy of the school record of 1:33.68 set at the 1997 league championships.
Despite not making the finals in the 500 freestyle, freshman Emily Wisolek (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge H.S.) posted the third-fastest time in program history in the event with a final wall touch of 4:58.94.
Classmate Cheyanne Jackson (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.) added the fourth-best individual effort in program history in the 500 freestyle with an exhibition time of 5:01.00.
Day three of the 2011 MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships gets underway at 11 a.m. Friday beginning with preliminary action in the 400 individual medley.

DAY ONE RECAP
ATHENS, Ohio - - Behind three school-record performances, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team is seventh among eight teams after the first day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by Ohio University at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
The Cardinals finished the opening day of the four-day meet with 48 points, 24 points behind first-place Miami which scored 72. Host Ohio is second at 66, followed by Buffalo (60), Bowling Green (56), Akron (54), Eastern Michigan (54), BSU and Toledo (40).
The first day of the meet featured a pair of relay events starting with the 200 medley relay. The Cardinals placed sixth in the event with a school-record time of 1:43.19, bettering the previous record of 1:43.82 set at last season's MAC Championship meet.
Junior Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) started the 200 medley relay with a school-record 50 backstroke split of 26.18, bettering her previous record of 26.53 set at the EMU Invitational earlier this season. Joining Saulters on the record-setting 200 medley relay were freshman Bridgette Ruehl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell H.S.), senior Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper H.S.) and sophomore Mallory Przybylinski (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.).
In the only other event of the opening day, freshman Emily Wisolek (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge H.S.), sophomore Jillian Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind./Hamilton Heights H.S.), freshman Haley Richter (Roanoke, Ind./Columbia City H.S.) and senior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) combined to post a school-record time of 7:32.35 in the 800 freestyle relay. The effort was 2.01 seconds faster than the previous record of 7:34.36 set by the same relay group at the EMU Invite earlier this year.
Action in the 2011 MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships continues Thursday at 11 a.m. beginning with preliminary heats in the 500 freestyle.
