October 02, 2011 | Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team notched its third straight Mid-American Conference victory and improved to 6-1-1 over the past eight games as the Cardinals posted a 2-0 victory over hosting Bowling Green Sunday afternoon at Cochrane Field.
The Cardinals improve to 8-4-1 on the year and 3-1-0 in MAC play after posting two league road wins this weekend. Ball State's eight wins already surpasses last season's win total (seven) and is its most wins in a season since 2008 (nine).
Ball State dominated play in the first half as it held an 11-3 advantage in shots, including 10 of the first 11 shots of the game. The Cardinals' early offensive pressure led to the game's first goal in the 17th minute of play as they were awarded a free kick just inside the midfield line.
Junior defender Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) stepped up and lofted the ball into the 18-yard box off the set piece. Freshman defender Victoria Jacobs (Oakville, Ontario/St. Ignatius of Loyola) made a stellar run in the box and got her head on the end of the cross, drilling it into the back of the net past Bowling Green goalkeeper Becca Ison for the 1-0 lead.
The goal was the first of the career for Jacobs as she becomes the 11th different Cardinal to score a goal this season. She also is the sixth different member of the Cardinals' 11-member freshman class to score a goal through the first 13 games of the season.
Ball State continued to dominate the run of play and pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 32nd minute. The Cardinals were attacking the BGSU goal and during a flurry of shots, junior midfielder Maggie Brown (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box and poked it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Junior forward Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) recorded her third assist of the season on the goal, marking her third straight game with an assist.
The Cardinals kept the pressure on the Falcons early in the second half as freshman forward Jasmine Moses (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) posted two shots in the first five minutes of the second frame. Ball State out-shot the Falcons 4-1 in the first 15 minutes of the second half on its way to a dominating 16-6 edge in shots for the game. Jacobs led the Cardinals with four shots in the victory while Moses and Stroinski each tallied three shots.
Junior goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler (Waukesha, Wis./UT-Martin) posted three saves in the victory to notch her fourth shutout of the year and the sixth clean slate of her career. Buehler has now tallied four shutouts in the last six games and has an 0.67 goals against average over that same stretch. Ison posted five saves in the loss for Bowling Green which falls to 4-9-0 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.
The Cardinals return home for four straight games, beginning Friday afternoon as they host Akron. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex.
