T&F Preps For IWU Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team returns to action Saturday at Noon, when it makes the short trip up I-69 to Marion, Ind., for the 2011 IWU Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
This marks the third season BSU will compete in the event. In its first trip to the invitational in 2009, the Cardinals picked up nine event wins and three IWU Indoor Sports Complex records. Last season, the Cardinals scored eight wins at the meet.
This year's event will be scored for the first time, and will also feature some tough competition, with Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois entered into the meet. Other teams slated to compete include Anderson, Bethel College, Indianapolis, St. Joseph's, Trinity Christian and host Indiana Wesleyan.
Junior sprinter Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was BSU's top performer a year ago, collecting three first-place finishes. Taylor scored wins in the 60m (7.77) and 200m dash (25.64) and also ran the anchor leg for the first-place 4x200 relay which clocked in a 1:44.33.
Entering the meet, the Cardinals' squad boasts six student-athletes ranked in the top 10 in their respective events in the Mid-American Conference.
For the second-straight week, sophomore Judah Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain H.S.) is BSU's top-ranked runner, holding the No. 3 slot in the 500m dash (1:19.02). She also ranks 14th in the 400m dash (57.87).
Senior Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) is BSU's top-ranked field event participant, with a No. 4 showing in the long jump (18-10.5). Freshman Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport H.S.) enters the week ranked fifth in the league in the high jump (5-6.5).
